Police in Masindi District in Western Uganda have arrested a 30-year-old man, identified only as Okecha, after he allegedly killed his father, who had accused him of theft.
The victim, Alex Omochi, 60,
was a resident of Nyakabaale village in Kiruuli sub-county, Masindi district,
and served as the Nyakabaale Village Chairman. The incident occurred following
a community meeting where neighbours complained about Okecha's alleged serial
thefts.
During the meeting, Okecha
faced accusations of stealing items such as solar panels and subwoofers. Henry
Kisasi, a resident, recounted that the suspect became angry when asked to
explain his alleged thefts. Okecha then left the meeting, returning with a
machete.
“When he was probed about his
theft, Okecha jumped out of the meeting and returned with a machete, causing
other members to flee, leaving Omochi helpless. He pushed his father to the
ground and started stabbing him in the neck, killing him instantly,” said
Kisasi.
Residents immediately alerted
the police, who rushed to the scene and transported the body to Masindi General
Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Albertine Region Police Public
Relations Officer, SP Julius Allan Hakiza, confirmed the incident, noting that
the suspect had gone into hiding but was later arrested. Okecha is awaiting
arraignment in court on murder charges.
