The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a stern warning to Turkish Airlines, stating that it will not hesitate to impose sanctions under the organization’s regulations in response to the mistreatment of Nigerian passengers.
In a
statement to reporters on Wednesday in Lagos, Mr. Michael Achimugu, Director of
Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at NCAA, revealed that President Bola
Tinubu had instructed the NCAA, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria
(FAAN), and other relevant agencies to ensure the protection of Nigerian
passengers' rights.
The
ongoing dispute between Turkish Airlines and aviation labor unions, which
resulted in the picketing of the airline's operations at the Murtala Muhammed
International Airport in Lagos, is currently under mediation by the NCAA.
Achimugu
emphasized that Turkish Airlines could face severe penalties and sanctions for
leaving Nigerian passengers stranded at the airport by failing to transport
them to Istanbul.
He
further stated that the Federal Government and its agencies are committed to
holding airlines accountable for any violations of Nigerian passengers' rights.
Achimugu
disclosed that the Director-General of NCAA, Capt. Chris Najomo, initiated
reconciliatory efforts between Turkish Airlines' Country Manager and the unions
during a virtual meeting on Tuesday, but noted the airline's disrespectful
conduct towards regulatory authorities.
As the
impasse continues, Achimugu affirmed that the Federal Government will
thoroughly investigate the situation and impose appropriate punishment if
Turkish Airlines is found to be at fault.
The
plight of over 300 stranded passengers was highlighted by Achimugu, who assured
them that the NCAA would persist until they are safely transported to their
destinations.
Among
the stranded passengers is Obiekwe Ngozichukwu, a resident of Guttenberg,
Sweden, who expressed concerns about potential job loss due to flight
cancellations, while Charles Ifeanyi, a Germany-based construction worker,
urged the Federal Government to intervene and prevent further mistreatment of
Nigerians abroad.
The
NCAA reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights of Nigerian
passengers and ensuring that airlines operate in compliance with regulations.
