As Nigeria grapples with a worsening fuel scarcity crisis, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) announced an imminent National Executive Council meeting set for Monday to address the pressing issue.
IPMAN's National President,
Hammed Fashola, underscored the necessity of Monday's gathering in light of
persistent fuel shortages, despite recent initiatives by the Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
Fashola revealed that the NNPC,
the country's sole importer of petroleum products, had opened reserves in all
depots nationwide on Friday to alleviate the lengthy queues at fuel stations.
This move followed the receipt of 300 million litres of fuel by the Major
Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria from eight vessels during the week,
which was subsequently distributed to members in Apapa and other Lagos
locations.
South-West Regional Coordinator
of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Ayo
Cardoso, reported the offloading of 240 million litres at various depots on
Monday, with an additional 85 million litres by Tuesday evening.
However, Fashola stressed the
importance of Monday's meeting to evaluate the effectiveness of recent
interventions and to chart further engagement with the NNPC. He emphasized
collaboration with the NNPC and urged the public to cease panic buying to
alleviate the scarcity.
Concurrently, the Petroleum
Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria convened with independent
marketers on Saturday to address the crisis. PETROAN's Dr. Billy Gilly-Harry
expressed confidence in collaborative efforts with the NNPC, anticipating
improved solutions to the scarcity issue.
Gilly-Harry highlighted the significance of implementing NNPC's solutions and emphasized the emerging positive outcomes, noting eased queues in Abuja and efforts to curb price gouging in the South-South and South-East regions.
The forthcoming meetings
reflect concerted efforts to combat fuel scarcity and ensure equitable
distribution across Nigeria, underscoring the urgency and collaborative spirit
in addressing the crisis.
