…FG adamant of N54,000, Private sector makes N57,000
In a significant move to expedite negotiations on a new national minimum wage, the Organised Labour at the ongoing Tripartite Committee on the National Minimum Wage has lowered its demand from N615,000 to N500,000.
A
source at the meeting disclosed that the government remains firm on
its offer of N54,000, citing funding constraints and the private sector's
inability to meet higher wage demands. However, the private sector has slightly
increased its offer to N57,000 from the initial N54,000.
The
source revealed, "The government acknowledges the NLC's evidence-based
presentation but argues that eight states are either not paying or not fully
implementing the 2019 minimum wage."
The
source added, "The government cites a lack of funds and the private
sector's financial incapacity as major obstacles."
On the
Labour's revised stance, the source noted, "Labour was requested to adjust
their demand in response to the government's position. They complied, reducing
their demand to N500,000."
Imo
State Governor Hope Uzodimma was also present at the meeting. "The Imo
State Governor has stepped in. Although he is not a committee member, it is
beneficial to have a governor involved, given the regular absence of the six
governors on the committee," the source remarked.
