Grandmother Arrested For Allegedly Burying Newborn Grandchild Alive

In a tragic incident in the Ogombo area of Ajah, Lagos State, a grandmother has been arrested for allegedly burying her 17-year-old daughter's newborn baby alive. The grandmother, whose identity has not been disclosed, took the drastic action reportedly to conceal her daughter's pregnancy from the public.

Reports indicate that when neighbours began to suspect that the teenager, identified as Favour, was pregnant, they informed the grandmother. Despite their concerns, she denied the pregnancy and attempted to hide it. Favour, who gave birth without assistance, revealed in a video posted by Peace Ighodaro on X.com, that she informed her mother immediately after the birth.

"I was the one that called my mother after I gave birth. When I gave birth, I did not know what was going on," Favour stated in the video. According to Ighodaro, the grandmother took the newborn from Favour, claiming the baby did not survive.

The post further alleges that despite offers to adopt the baby, the grandmother chose to end its life. A neighbour, who requested anonymity, reported seeing the grandmother burying the baby in the backyard. By the time he intervened, the baby had died.

"It’s disturbing why the neighbour chose to watch till the baby was buried before deciding to intervene. Even before the baby was buried, the neighbour said he saw the baby was still crying and also saw when the grandmother was digging the ground," the source added.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, stating that the grandmother has been arrested. "The grandma has been arrested; the mother heard her baby crying after the grandmother took the baby from her. The grandmother later returned to tell her that the baby had died," Hundeyin said. "Investigation revealed that she buried the baby alive and the baby had died when neighbours dug the grave to rescue it. It was premeditated; the mother of the baby is 17 years old and she is in our custody, not as a suspect but to be taken care of."

The case has sparked outrage and raised questions about the actions of both the grandmother and the neighbours. Further investigations are ongoing.
