In an unusual turn of events, the body of a woman has remained in a mortuary in Anambra state for four years and three months due to disputes over her late husband’s property among her children. The incident occurred in Awka-Etiti, Idemili South Local Government Area of the State.
According to one of the woman's
daughters, Mrs. Okonkwo, their mother passed away in January 2020 and was
placed in the mortuary, where she has remained since then without being buried.
The delay in burial is attributed to their brother, Mr. Isaac, who insists that
their mother's body will not be laid to rest until issues surrounding the
distribution of their late father's property are resolved.
Despite efforts by Mrs. Okonkwo
to initiate discussions with her brother, who resides in Aba, Abia State,
regarding their mother's burial, no progress has been made. Their late father's
property and documents are currently undergoing probate proceedings in Umuahia,
the capital of Abia State. Despite repeated invitations to attend the probate
court, Mr. Isaac has refused to cooperate, insisting on a resolution of the
property issues before their mother can be buried.
Mrs. Okonkwo lamented her
brother's actions, recalling how he caused distress to their late mother while
she was alive, including mismanagement and unauthorized sale of their late
father's property. She expressed regret that his obstinacy persists even after
their parents' passing, resulting in the prolonged delay of their mother's
burial.
In response to the situation,
the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Mrs. Ify
Obinabo, expressed disapproval of the prolonged delay in burying the deceased's
body. She assured Mrs. Okonkwo of the Ministry's intervention and pledged to
engage with the brother to facilitate the resolution of the property issues and
ensure the deceased's proper burial.
