Bakare, whose address was not
provided, faces a charge of felony child stealing.
Chief Magistrate A. B.
Olagbegi-Adelabu adjourned the case until May 16 for legal advice from the
office of the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, refraining from
taking Bakare's plea.
According to Lagos State
Prosecuting counsel Olawunmi Osibanjo, Bakare committed the offence on March 14
around 5:30 pm in the Allynson St. Area of Ikorodu. Osibanjo stated that Bakare
allegedly held the hand of the crying nine-year-old girl while walking on the
road.
"People who witnessed the
incident questioned the defendant after the girl indicated that the woman was
not her mother," Osibanjo explained. "The mother of the girl, upon
arrival, confirmed she had no prior acquaintance with the defendant."
The prosecutor noted that the
offence violates Section 277 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, with a
potential penalty of 14 years' imprisonment if Bakare is found guilty.
