The Commander of Sectorc 3 of
the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has apprehended two individuals
suspected of planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) for Boko Haram. The
individuals, identified as 19-year-old Abubakar Mohammed and 13-year-old Bana
Modu, were captured in Monguno Government Area of Borno State.
Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar
Abdullahi, the Chief Military Public Information Officer in Ndjamena, disclosed
that the suspects surrendered on Sunday. This development is considered a significant
achievement in the ongoing efforts to dismantle Boko Haram operations in the
region.
According to Abdullahi, during
preliminary interrogations, Mohammed and Modu confessed to being instructed to
plant IEDs along specific roads in Borno State. However, they chose to abandon
their mission, escape with the IEDs, and turn themselves in to the MNJTF
instead.
Their decision to surrender was
reportedly influenced by the recent conclusion of Operation NASHRUL SALAM, a
non-kinetic operation by the MNJTF, and the sector's personalized engagement
strategy with relevant sources. This demonstrates the effectiveness of
psychological operations in combating terrorism.
Items seized from the suspects
include two IEDs, two mobile phones, and a sum of N53,000. Abdullahi emphasized
that this development highlights the MNJTF's commitment to encouraging other
terrorists in the Lake Chad islands to surrender and contribute to achieving
lasting peace in the region.
He reiterated the MNJTF's
dedication to its mission of restoring peace and normalcy to the Lake Chad
Basin.
