The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the attack and killing of an operative of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) in Awka, the state capital.
It had earlier been reported
that some yet-to-be-identified gunmen on Thursday morning killed a traffic
warden of the Anambra Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA) in Awka, the state
capital.
The ARTMA officer whose name
has not been disclosed at the time of filing this report was killed at the
popular Aroma Roundabout while on duty.
Confirming the incident in a
short statement made available to Heraldviews, the Police Public Relations
Officer in the state, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said that the ARTMA team was attacked
while patrolling the Aroma area and environs against traffic violators.
The police spokesperson said
that the incident occurred at about 0630hrs near the popular Aroma Roundabout
when the ARTMA team tried to block a carton colour Lexus 330 Jeep that took one
way from Ifite axis.
According to Ikenga, while the
ARTMA team tried to stop the car, the occupants of the said Jeep opened fire on
them, killing one of the officers while other members of the team scampered for
safety.
He said that the body of the
deceased officer has been recovered and deposited in the morgue, adding that
the criminal elements are now being trailed by Operatives Mine and an anti-cultism
team to face justice.
The PPRO said, “There was an
attack on a team of ATMA Operatives patrolling Aroma area & environs
against traffic violators that occurred today at about 0630 hrs near Aroma
junction.
“The team tried to block a
carton color Lexus 330 jeep that took one way from Ifite end when the occupants
of the said jeep opened fire on them, killing one of the staff, while other
members of the team scampered for safety.
“The body has been recovered
and deposited in the morgue. The criminal elements are now being trailed by
operatives mine and an anti-cultism team to face justice.”
