CKC Onitsha clinches first-place at World Affairs Challenge 2024

In a historic achievement, Nigeria secured the top spot at the esteemed World Affairs Challenge (WAC) 2024, marking the country's first gold win in the competition's 32-year history.

Representing Nigeria, Christ the King College (CKC) Onitsha clinched the coveted global first-place position at the event organized by WorldDenver. The World Affairs Challenge empowers high school students to devise innovative solutions for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing pressing issues such as climate change, poverty, and inequality.

The CKC Onitsha team, comprising Ekufu Ernest, Obuna Somtochukwu, Umeodinka Emmanuel, Ejike Ekene, and Ubah Jason, under the guidance of their coach, Mr. John Onuigbo, captivated judges with their project, "Wise Tales by Primus." This impactful initiative entails a series of digital comic stories tackling environmental degradation, climate change, and substance abuse, with the aim of raising awareness and fostering positive change among young audiences.

The journey to victory began at the African Regional Competition, where CKC Onitsha emerged as the highest-scoring Nigerian team and among the top five in Africa. Advancing to the virtual global finals, the team's comprehensive understanding and impassioned delivery during the final Q&A session left a lasting impression on evaluators.

Praising the team's exceptional performance, the judges commended their "Excellent presentation and applications of SMART indexes with extraordinary action plans for global outreach through language translation and website creative solutions dynamics." They lauded the project as innovative, creative, and illustrious.

Today, CKC Onitsha was officially declared the World Affairs Challenge 2024 Global Champion, surpassing teams from across the globe. Redmond High School, WA, USA, and TEVITÖL High School, Turkey, secured third and second place, respectively.

Reacting to the victory, Rev. Fr. Celestine Arinze Okafor, the school principal, emphasized that CKC Onitsha's win signifies the remarkable potential and innovative spirit of Nigerian youth. He noted that beyond securing a historic victory, the team has inspired others to confront global challenges with creativity and dedication.

In a further boost to their achievement, the CKC Onitsha team will journey to Denver, Colorado, USA, later this month for the award ceremony. There, they will have the opportunity to showcase their project to a global audience and engage with fellow young leaders in the pursuit of positive change.
