Popular cross-dresser, Idris
Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, has been sentenced to six months in custody
by the Federal High Court in Lagos for Naira abuse. The trial judge, Abimbola
Awogboro, delivered the verdict on Friday, imposing the jail term on the social
media influencer after convicting him on April 5.
Bobrisky pleaded guilty to the
charges filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC), leading to his conviction. The judge ordered his remand in EFCC custody
pending sentencing.
Originally scheduled for April
9, the sentencing was postponed due to the Eid-el-Fitr holiday. During the
arraignment, the EFCC had filed charges against Bobrisky, including counts of
Naira abuse and alleged money laundering.
Prosecuting counsel Sulaiman
Sulaiman requested the court to strike out counts five and six related to money
laundering. The judge granted this request and directed Bobrisky to face the
remaining charges.
Bobrisky, whose face was
covered with a black hijab, complied with the judge's directive to unveil his
face before pleading guilty to each of the four counts.
The EFCC had detained Bobrisky
on April 4 for Naira abuse, following a viral video showing him spraying and
flaunting wads of new Naira notes at a movie premiere. The commission revealed
that Bobrisky had committed similar offenses at other event centers and parties.
In the charges, Bobrisky was accused of tampering with various sums of money at different events, including at the IMAX Circle Mall in Lekki, Aja Junction in Ikorodu, White Steve Event Hall in Ikeja, and Oniru in Victoria Island.
Bobrisky, who had been in the
news recently for controversies surrounding awards and disputes, now faces a
period of custody as a consequence of his actions.
