South-East Nominee Rejects Tinubu’s Appointment

A candidate nominated for a position on the Board of Directors of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Urum Kalu Eke, has turned down the offer, citing his ongoing engagement with the World Bank. This information surfaced during the Thursday plenary when the Senate initiated the confirmation process for the nominees.

President Bola Tinubu had submitted the names of Urum and four others on February 13 for Senate confirmation as board members of the CBN. However, during the confirmation session, Senator Orji Kalu, former Governor of Abia State, informed the Senate that his constituent had declined the offer due to a potential conflict with his current role as a consultant with the World Bank.

Senator Kalu conveyed, "The nominee informed me that accepting this role would create a conflict with his position as a consultant for the World Bank, Federal Government agencies, and other private entities."

Meanwhile, the Senate successfully confirmed the appointments of four other individuals as Directors on the CBN Board, as submitted by the President. The confirmed members are Robert Agbede, Ado Yakubu Wanka, Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi, and Mrs. Muslimat Olanike Aliyu.

The confirmation followed the consideration of a report from the screening process presented by Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance & Other Financial Institutions. Senator Abiru clarified that Urum Kalu Eke was not cleared by the Committee from Abia because he did not appear for the screening.
