Police In Manhunt For Fleeing Nurse Over Failed Abortion

A nurse in Oke-Owa, in the Ijebu Ode area of Ogun State, is currently being sought by authorities after allegedly performing an abortion on a woman identified as Deborah Sokoya, leading to severe complications.

According to a police source, the abortion, allegedly carried out without Sokoya's consent, resulted in uncontrollable bleeding, necessitating her hospitalization. Sokoya had reportedly visited her elder sister, Mutiat Sokoya, in the Iperin area of Ijebu-Ode, where she was purportedly lured to the location of the procedure.

The victim's boyfriend, Peter Balogun, who reported the incident to the Igbeba Police Division on March 20, 2024, claimed that his girlfriend had visited her sister, only to be coerced into the abortion by her sibling.

Police Public Relations Officer Omolola Odutola stated that preliminary investigations revealed Balogun had financed a previous abortion for Sokoya in September 2023. Mutiat Sokoya and Balogun have been detained for questioning.

Efforts are underway to apprehend the nurse and any other individuals involved in the alleged abortion, Odutola added.

Deborah Sokoya is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be responding positively.
