N50k Sɘx Romp: Lawyer Arraigned For Refusing To Pay Commercial Sex Worker

A 26-year-old lawyer, Ekunife Emmanuel, has been arraigned by the police in a Lugbe Grade I Area Court in Abuja on charges of allegedly assaulting a commercial sex worker. Mr. Emmanuel, residing in Jahi, Abuja, faced accusations of criminal breach of trust, assault, causing hurt, and inciting disturbance, charges he denied.

Prosecuting counsel Olisaemeka Okeke informed the court that the complaint was filed by Queeneth John, a commercial sex worker from Wuse Zone 5 Abuja, at Asokoro police station on March 12. According to Mr. Okeke, Ms. John alleged that on March 11, around 10 p.m., the defendant approached her while she was hawking in Wuse, took her to Bannex Plaza, and demanded sex. Subsequently, he allegedly escorted her to Hotel Guzape, promising to pay her N50,000 after intercourse.

Mr. Okeke further informed the court that the defendant engaged in sexual activity with the complainant but failed to fulfill his promise of payment, leading to a physical altercation where Ms. John sustained bruises. Additionally, Mr. Emmanuel purportedly incited disturbance at Asokoro Police Station by recording video footage of officers on duty.

During police investigation, Mr. Emmanuel reportedly confessed to the allegations, which were said to contravene the provisions of Sections 312, 365, 244, and 114 of the Penal Code.

Judge Aliyu Kagarko granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N1 million, along with a surety of equivalent value. "I hereby grant the defendant bail in line with section 165(2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 to deposit 10 per cent of the bail sum at the court registry pending the determination of the case," stated Judge Kagarko. He ordered that the surety must be a legal practitioner with a minimum of five years' experience and must present their call to bar certificate. The surety must also reside within the court's jurisdiction. The case was adjourned until April 18 for further proceedings.
