ACTDA Dismantles Criminal Hub, Drug Den In Awka

On March 7, 2024, the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) took a decisive and swift action to disassemble a criminal hideout and illicit drug hub along Enugu-Onitsha old road in Agwu-Awka (ICC axis).

The move aimed to address the rapid expansion of the said criminal hideout and curb the illicit activities that had taken root in the area.

Prompted by the increase of drug peddlers and criminals, the area known as the "shanty town" witnessed the intervention of ACTDA, despite previous warnings, the illegal occupants persisted, compelling the necessity for a comprehensive response.

Addressing Journalists in Awka, the Head of Awka Capital Territory Development Control Unit Mr. Charles Ekwunife said the event reinforces the importance of swift and resolute actions in maintaining the safety and well-being of urban spaces.

According to him, ACTDA Enforcement Team successfully demolished the premises of illegal occupant in "shanty town", revealing a substantial stock of various illicit drugs, and ensuring the evacuation of all residents.

He stated that the demolition not only signifies a crucial step towards restoring sanity and order in the capital city but also reflects the proactive measures taken by ACTDA to address pressing community concerns.

Residents, who chose to remain anonymous while speaking to journalists, expressed their satisfaction with ACTDA's actions, commending the authority for restoring sanity in the state. Joy-filled and relieved, they underscored the persistent challenges posed by the criminal hub and welcomed the intervention.

They thanked Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo for coming to their rescue recounting instances of robbery, house burglary, and unchecked invasion by cows in their vicinity.
