In a press statement on Wednesday, the Nigeria Police Force asserted that a significant number of reported kidnapping cases in the country are either fabricated or orchestrated.
The declaration was made by the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi,
during the presentation of a gold medal to the victor of Ache and kickboxing at
the 14th edition of the Biennial Police Games, themed "Oluyole 2024."
The event took place at Ilaji Resorts Hotel in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo
State.
Adejobi clarified that the security
challenges in Nigeria are not as dire as perceived by most Nigerians. He
attributed the exaggerated perception to the influence of social media, where
incidents are often misrepresented and recycled as current affairs. According
to him, many reported kidnapping incidents are deceptive, with individuals
feigning abduction to extort money from their families or to collect ransom.
The Force spokesperson
emphasized that the police possess comprehensive information and data on
security incidents, affirming that the situation is not as alarming as
portrayed on social media. He noted that while isolated cases do occur, the
police regularly apprehend culprits, conduct operations against criminal
hideouts, neutralize threats, and bring offenders to justice.
Adejobi urged the public to
collaborate with law enforcement agencies in combating insecurity, emphasizing
the importance of promptly reporting suspicious activities to enable swift
police intervention.
In a separate statement, CP
Patric Athairu, the Director of Sports for the Nigeria Police Force,
highlighted the dual purpose of the Police Games, emphasizing its role in
discovering new talents. He mentioned ongoing efforts to verify and introduce
these talents to the federation for necessary support. Additionally, Athairu
provided an update on the medals table, revealing that Zone two currently leads
with 17 golds and over 35 medals, followed closely by the Force Headquarters
with 15 golds and 34 medals.
