Economic hardship: Lagos police vow to clamp down on protesters

Lagos, the State Police Command has vowed to crush demonstrators attempting to impede the free flow of traffic, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining public safety and order.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the command's Public Relations Officer, conveyed this stance on Sunday, outlining the measures in place to safeguard lives and property.

Hundeyin stated that the police were aware of planned protests in the state and assured residents that necessary precautions would be taken to ensure the unobstructed flow of traffic and a peaceful environment for lawful activities. The command underscored its commitment to upholding the rights of individuals to carry out their duties without hindrance.

The announcement comes in the wake of protests erupting in various states over the high cost of living and escalating food prices. Notably, a recent demonstration in Ibadan saw youths taking to the streets with placards demanding an end to food price hikes and inflation.

In response to the proposed protest in Lagos, the Police Commissioner, CP Adegoke Fayoade, issued a statement on X, emphasizing the commitment to maintaining public safety and order. The statement reads, "The Command will live up to its mandate of ensuring that no person or group of persons is allowed to infringe on the fundamental human rights of others, especially the rights to freedom of movement and right to dignity of human persons."

CP Adegoke warned potential protesters that any infringement on the rights of fellow Nigerians would be dealt with in accordance with the law. He urged peace-loving Lagosians to carry on with their lawful duties without fear of harassment or intimidation, assuring them of adequate security measures in place to guarantee their safety and security.

As Lagos anticipates potential protests, the police command's unequivocal stance serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between the right to peaceful assembly and the imperative to maintain public order and safety.
