The Guardian, on January 20, 2024, featured a public opinion poll (POP) titled "Discordant Tunes Over Tinubu's Plan to Deploy Forest Guards to Curb Kidnapping." The article discussed President Tinubu's proposal to establish forest guards and criticized the selection of respondents, likening it to the tactics employed by President Buhari's Information Minister, Lai Mohammed.
The respondents were allegedly
handpicked to align with President Tinubu's centralized idea of federal
government-controlled forest guards. This approach is viewed as a
countermeasure against the widespread demand for multi-level policing,
characteristic of a federal system of government, which is the essence of
governance restructuring.
The article expressed concern
over the seemingly orchestrated positive responses to Tinubu's forest guards
proposal, describing it as a "laughable gimmick." The author
highlighted the need for a decentralized security arrangement and criticized
the endorsement by a purported "security expert" who failed to
acknowledge the benefits of multi-level policing observed in federal systems
worldwide.
In a sarcastic tone, the author
suggested sending the supposed "forest guards" to various countries
for training and then deploying them back to Nigeria as spirits to combat
kidnappers, drawing a parallel with the rehabilitation approach used for groups
like Boko Haram, ISWAP, and ISIS.
