Chaos erupted at Araromi Ilogbo Secondary School in Oko Afo, Lagos, as students protested the alleged flogging death of their classmate, 16-year-old David Babadipo, by a teacher identified as Mr. Oluwale. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, led to turmoil within and outside the school premises.
In a video obtained on Friday,
students were seen running in disarray, with a voice in the background claiming
that the deceased pupil was flogged by a teacher when he attempted to go out to
purchase something.
An X user, Mama Sassy D,
expressed concern, stating, "This is my vicinity. They have started
rioting already. The said teacher might not survive this period."
However, conflicting accounts
emerged on social media, with Esther Wusu refuting the claim that the student
was flogged to death. She asserted that Mr. Oluwale was the school's vice
principal and did not beat the student, who had been sick since Tuesday.
According to Wusu, the parent was contacted to pick up the child after his
condition worsened.
On the other hand, Bangose Jide
reported the incident on Facebook, alleging that Mr. Olawale, the vice
principal, beat David Babadipo to death and that the case had been reported to
the Morogbo Police Station on Badagry Expressway.
The state Police Public
Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, had not confirmed whether the case was
reported at the station at the time of this report. Efforts to obtain a comment
from the school were unsuccessful, as calls to the provided contact number went
unanswered, and a text message sent by our correspondent received no response.
