Legionnaires and Heavy Duty Military Widows in the Anambra State chapter are seeking support from Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, requesting operational vehicles, land, and financial assistance to enhance their effectiveness.
This plea was made during the
celebration of the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square
in Awka, the state capital. Chief Agbogu Benedict, the State chairman of the
Nigerian Legion, expressed gratitude for the successful occasion and conveyed
optimism that Governor Soludo would come to their aid by fulfilling their
requests. He emphasized the amicable relationship between their organizations
and the state government.
Chief Agbogu Benedict stated,
"Our relationship with the government is very cordial. We want the
government to support us with land to establish our state secretariat. We also
request operational vehicles and financial assistance to support our elderly,
those incapacitated, and those who sustained injuries during the civil war and
operations. Even the widows of the fallen heroes need assistance. The governor
has been wonderful in terms of the state's infrastructural development and
maintains a friendly relationship with us, unlike the former governor."
Hon. Awele Menkiti, the state
chairman of the Heavy Duty Military Widows Association, also pleaded with the
Governor for vehicles and land to build their secretariat, citing the hindrance
caused by the lack of these resources to the smooth running of the association.
He expressed appreciation for
Governor Soludo's efforts in ensuring tight security during the Yuletide
period, attributing the success to initiatives like the Special Anti Tout
Squad. However, he highlighted challenges such as the need for government
support in providing vehicles and offices for the union.
Hon. Chinonso Unamba, Head of Operation for Military Widows, Police, and Heavy Duty Widows Association, emphasized the importance of unity and satisfaction among military widows to prevent hardship. He called for collaboration between the association and the Federal Government to improve the welfare of widows.
The National President of the
Military Widows, Mrs. Veronica Aluku, was acknowledged for her contributions to
the association's welfare activities. Hon. Chinonso Unamba urged cooperation
with the Federal Government to enhance the widows' ability to fend for themselves.
Chief Rogers Uche Nebuwa, the
National President of the Heavy Duty Military Widows Association, commended
Governor Soludo for initiatives like the anti-touting squad that improved
security. He requested the Governor's assistance in supporting military widows
and their dependants, emphasizing the sacrifices made by fallen heroes for the
nation.
