Hoodlums Clash With ACTDA Officials On Enforcement Duty In Awka

By Ndife David, Awka

No fewer than fifty angry youths collaborated with petty traders to attack ACTDA officials during a major enforcement exercise in the Awka Capital Territory. The hoodlums, predominantly men in their late twenties and thirties, were observed carrying stones, bottles, and sticks, which they vehemently used to attack both the agency officials and members of the Nigeria Civil Defence Corp assigned to maintain law and order during the enforcement exercise.

Fortunately, the gallant NSDC personnel overpowered the angry mob, creating a safe and secure atmosphere for the ACTDA officials to carry out their duty. The operation marked a massive success as goods worth millions of naira were burned and completely destroyed, serving as a deterrent to others.

The areas visited included the dual-carriage Unizik-Isuaniocha Road, Club Road, and Regina Ceali Road, respectively. The management of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) had earlier issued repeated warnings, providing ample time for those erecting shanties and engaging in unlawful activities along the roads in Awka, particularly under high tension, to cease their actions that contribute significantly to defacing the aesthetics of the Awka Capital City.

Despite the authority's warnings, the defiant individuals unfortunately continued their unlawful activities, notably the resurfacing of street traders along the newly constructed roads. The authority reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to an ongoing campaign against street traders involved in the illegal display and marketing of goods at prohibited locations, causing obstruction and gridlock within the city.

They issued a stern warning to those engaging in these illegal activities to desist immediately, evacuate their goods, or face more severe consequences for their inactions.
