Soludo Condemns Financial Strain Linked To Burial Practices

-         Restates Commitment To Anambra Burial Laws

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has voiced his disapproval of the disconcerting trend where individuals resort to extreme measures such as borrowing or selling their property to finance burial ceremonies. The Governor firmly asserted that such practices are detrimental and should be actively discouraged.

Governor Soludo made these remarks during the solemn service held in honour of his late father, Pa Simeon Soludo, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Umueze-Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, this past Saturday.

Expressing concern over the financial strain associated with burials, Governor Soludo emphasized his commitment to fostering a more sustainable and responsible approach to cultural and traditional practices.

He extended gratitude to all who participated in the ceremony and took the opportunity to remind the community of an existing law in Anambra aimed at curbing extravagant expenditures during funeral rites. The Governor highlighted the difficulty many face in burying their loved ones due to financial constraints.

In a reflective moment, Governor Soludo shared a personal anecdote, recounting his father's dedication to imparting catechism lessons after the civil war. He revealed a pivotal experience where his failure to recite a lesson resulted in disciplinary action, shaping his commitment to catechism ever since. Acknowledging his family's religious practices, he detailed their worship at St. Jude, involvement in morning masses, and participation in the Block Rosary.

Despite the prominence of the ceremony, the Soludo family opted for a modest mourning approach, refraining from printing posters, brochures, or issuing invitations. The Governor underscored the unfortunate reality that some individuals, grappling with financial difficulties, resort to borrowing or selling their land to fund burial expenses.

Governor Soludo's address concluded with a powerful assertion that if, as the governor, he could bury his father without excessive spending, it is within reach for others to do the same. The homily delivered by Cardinal Peter Okpalaeke resonated with praises for the late Pa Soludo, commending his commitment to raising children with a strong moral compass. Cardinal Okpalaeke underscored the spiritual dimensions of life and the importance of seeking God.

Distinguished guests at the event included Governors Alex Otti of Abia State, Peter Mbah of Enugu State, former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and former Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha. The gathering of such esteemed dignitaries underscored the significance of the occasion within the political landscape.
