The Akwa Ibom State Police Command acted swiftly by arresting Mr. Ekere Sunday Ebong, a 55-year-old lawyer residing at Plot 40, L Line in Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, in response to a distressing family altercation captured in a viral social media video.
Expressing deep concern, the
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Odiko MacDon, at the state Command
headquarters in Ikot Akpanabia, strongly condemned the dehumanizing assault on
the woman involved. SP MacDon affirmed that the Commissioner of Police (CP),
Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, promptly ordered Mr. Ebong's arrest, given the severity
of the incident.
Known for a history of
perpetrating violent acts against his wife, the suspect was apprehended and is
presently in police custody, awaiting legal proceedings. The PPRO emphasized
that this rapid response was crucial to prevent further harm, potentially escalating
to a tragic outcome.
"In a video that went
viral, the suspect assaulted his wife, causing severe injuries, and this is not
the first time such violence has occurred," stated SP MacDon.
"As an agency entrusted
with the safeguarding of lives, property, and the maintenance of law and order,
we cannot tolerate Barrister Ebong's ongoing blatant violation of human rights.
Therefore, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, has directed the
arrest of the suspect to prevent potential murder and the breakdown of law and
order.
"The CP sternly warns
those engaged in violent crimes in the state to cease immediately. He
encourages family members to seek amicable resolutions to disputes rather than
resorting to violent attacks.
"Barrister Sunday Ebong
will face legal proceedings once the investigation is concluded."
The Commissioner of Police
emphasizes the imperative for individuals involved in violent crimes to cease
such activities and advocates for peaceful resolutions within families. The
arrest follows the circulation of a distressing video on social media,
underscoring the urgent need to address domestic violence and ensure the
protection of the dignity and rights of all individuals, especially women,
within homes and communities.
