In a significant development, peace seems to be on the horizon in Rivers State's political landscape as Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor/political mentor, Nyesom Wike, reached a resolution on December 18. The breakthrough came after a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Key resolutions from the
meeting include:
1. Immediate withdrawal of all
legal proceedings initiated by Governor Sir Fubara and his team in relation to
the political crisis in Rivers State.
2. Prompt discontinuation of
any impeachment proceedings initiated against the Governor by the Rivers State
House of Assembly.
3. Recognition of the
leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martin
Amaewhule, along with the 27 members who resigned from the PDP.
4. Swift reinstatement of
remunerations and benefits for all members of the Rivers State House of
Assembly and their staff. The Governor shall refrain from interfering with the
full funding of the Assembly.
5. Granting the Rivers State House
of Assembly the autonomy to choose their location for legislative business
without interference from the Executive arm of the government.
6. Governor Sir Fubara to
re-present the state budget to a properly constituted Rivers State House of
Assembly.
7. Resubmission of the names of
all commissioners in the Rivers State Executive Council who resigned due to the
political crisis for approval by the House of Assembly.
8. Rejection of the
establishment of a caretaker committee for local governments in Rivers State.
The dissolution of the Local Government administration is deemed null and void
and will not be acknowledged.
