Former House Speaker Ghali Umar Na’Abba Passes Away At 67

Former House of Representatives Speaker Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday. He was the second Speaker in the current 4th Republic, passed away. Na’Abba, elected as a Member of the House of Representatives in 1999 from Kano State, represented the Kano Municipal Federal Constituency.

His Speakership followed the resignation of then-Speaker Salisu Buhari from the same Kano State, amidst a certificate forgery scandal. Na’Abba succumbed to death at the National Hospital in Abuja around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, as confirmed by his brother, Ahmed Umar Na’Abba.

Ahmed stated, “He died around 3 a.m. in the wee hours of Wednesday at the National Hospital, Abuja. We are currently making arrangements for transportation of the corpse to Kano for burial.”

Survived by a wife and 10 children (eight females and two males), the late Ghali Na’Abba was previously rumored to have passed away in 2020, a claim that was later refuted. He joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and won the Kano Municipal Federal Constituency seat in the April 1999 general elections.

Born into the family of Alhaji Umar Na’Abba on September 27, 1958, in Tudun Wada, Kano City, Kano Municipal Local Government, Na’Abba studied political science at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, graduating in 1979. His father, an Islamic scholar and businessman, instilled virtues of hard work, entrepreneurship, religious inclination, prudence, and modesty in him.
