Canadian music icon Celine Dion, aged 55, is grappling with the effects of stiff person syndrome, a neurological disorder that has caused a loss of control over her muscles, as disclosed by her older sister Claudette, 75.
Last December, Dion, citing her
health condition, had to cancel her world tour. The progressive and incurable
nature of stiff person syndrome results in the body attacking its own nerve
cells, severely impacting mobility.
Claudette Dion expressed that
Celine is diligently working on her health but is currently unable to control
her muscles. The condition has been emotionally challenging for Celine, known
for her discipline and hard work ethic.
“In both our dreams and hers,
the goal is to return to the stage. In what capacity? I don't know,” Claudette
stated.
Highlighting the rarity of the
case, Claudette emphasized that scientific research on the disorder is limited
due to its infrequency. She pointed out the impact on vocal cords and heart
muscles, stating, “This is what comes to get me.”
Celine's family charity,
Fondation Maman Dion, has received an outpouring of support from well-wishers.
Claudette shared that many express love for Celine and offer prayers, sending
messages, presents, and blessed crucifixes.
Despite collaboration with top
researchers, Celine Dion has seen minimal improvement in her health, as
revealed by Claudette. She emphasized the importance of maintaining hope in the
face of the challenging search for effective treatment.
