In a significant development, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have officially rescinded the impeachment notice issued to Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The lawmakers convened their sessions in the state capital of Port Harcourt on Wednesday, focusing exclusively on the withdrawal of the impeachment notice during their deliberations.
This crucial decision follows a
high-stakes meeting held on Monday at the Aso Villa in Abuja, where President
Bola Tinubu successfully mediated a truce between the warring factions. The
lawmakers, who had previously been divided over the conflict between Governor
Fubara and his predecessor, current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory
Nyesom Wike, announced their withdrawal in a notice read on the house floor.
TVC reports that the lawmakers
cited respect for President Tinubu as the primary motivation behind their
decision to withdraw the impeachment notice. The conflict had led to a notable
split within the House, with 27 members defecting from the Peoples Democratic
Party to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The feud between Governor
Fubara and Minister Wike had created a tumultuous series of events, including
the emergence of parallel sittings, the revelation of an impeachment plot
against the governor, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and a wave of
resignations within Fubara's cabinet, particularly among commissioners aligned
with Wike.
The withdrawal of the
impeachment notice marks a turning point in the political landscape of Rivers
State, signaling a concerted effort by the Assembly to foster reconciliation
and unity following the intervention at the highest level of government. The
lawmakers' decision to prioritize national harmony and respect for the
presidency reflects a commitment to stability and the greater welfare of the
state.
