Emmanuel Amuneke, a former Super Eagles player, expresses confidence in the team's ability to secure victory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, emphasizing the importance of discipline. Amuneke, renowned for coaching the under-17 Nigerian team to victory in the 2015 Under-17 World Cup, believes the Super Eagles can make a significant impact if they exhibit cohesive teamwork during the upcoming AFCON.
The 53-year-old former head coach of Tanzania reminds Nigerians that other teams in the tournament also aspire to win. In response to a question from Punch about the Super Eagles' potential to clinch the 2023 AFCON title starting on January 13, the 1994 AFCON winner asserts, "Of course, they can if they play cohesively as a team. We need to bear in mind that there are other capable teams in the tournament, but I believe we have the players that can bring the title to Nigeria. We just need some discipline."
Additionally, Amuneke predicts that Victor Osimhen, a key player in his 2015 Under-17 World Cup triumph, has the potential to contend for the Ballon d'Or. Osimhen, who finished 8th in the 2023 Ballon d'Or rankings and recently extended his contract with Napoli, also secured the 2023 African Player of the Year, a title last won by Nigeria in 1999
Expressing his joy over
Osimhen's achievement, Amuneke states, "Very happy. It shows that he
didn't relent despite setbacks; he continued to work hard. I'm happy for him,
and I believe he can be a contender for the Ballon d'Or if he puts in more
effort in his game. He's evolving into the great player we saw in him nine
years ago when we first noticed him. With continued hard work and consistency,
he can win it again next year."
