The Nigerian Navy's (Forward Operating Base) Igbokoda Anti-Crude Oil Theft patrol team arrested 28 suspects for their alleged involvement in the theft of approximately 527,810 liters of crude oil. The arrests took place offshore in the Awoye riverine community located in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Captain Wasuku Alushi, the
Commanding Officer, disclosed this information during a press briefing at the
Naval Base in Igbokoda. According to Captain Alushi, the interception occurred
on December 11, 2023, when the patrol team halted a wooden boat, commonly
referred to as a "Cotonou Boat," laden with approximately 12,000
liters of crude oil near Illepte offshore at Awoye riverine community in Ilaje.
He elaborated further, stating,
“Based on credible intelligence, our Anti-Crude Oil Theft (COT) and illegal oil
bunkering team intercepted a large wooden boat, popularly known as a Cotonou
boat, with 11 individuals transferring suspected stolen crude into another boat
as the first Cotonou boat was taking in water. Two other speedboats were also
apprehended alongside the wooden boat.”
