Members of the Concerned Yoruba Community in Kano have issued a plea to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other Yoruba leaders, calling for their intervention in the sacking of Abba Kabir Yusuf by the Appeal Court.
The appeal was made during a special press conference in Kano, where concerns were raised about a perceived negative sentiment implying that elected individuals are being unjustly removed due to the Yoruba identity of the president, putting Yoruba residents in Kano at risk.
Leading the group, Taofeek Olalekan Olaosebikan expressed deep concern over the removal of Yusuf as governor, emphasizing the potentially adverse impact on the Yoruba community in the state. Given Kano's political volatility, the group urged all well-meaning individuals to unite in a collective effort to avert potential calamity affecting their lives and livelihoods.
"In this regard, we are using this platform to call on all Yoruba Obas and leaders of thought to promptly engage President Bola Ahmad Tinubu for a possible political settlement of the Kano logjam," Olaosebikan stated, stressing the need to prevent Kano from descending into avoidable chaos.
The group asserted that the ongoing political developments in Kano are closely tied to political elite interference, citing the denial of victory to Abba Kabir Yusuf's party in 2019 and the recurrence of a similar scenario in 2023, which they claim is met with resistance.
Alleging interference in the
judiciary, the group called upon former President Obasanjo and the Ooni of Ife
to intervene. Additionally, they appealed to the Oba of Lagos, Alake of Egba,
Awujale of Ijebuland, Olubadan of Ibadan, and other prominent Yoruba figures to
come to their aid, expressing the potential challenges they may face if the
situation deteriorates.
