The death toll from fighting between Israeli troops and Hamas militants in the Palestinian territory had reached 13,000 since the war began on October 7, According to Gaza’s Hamas government.
Hamas gunmen killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and captured around 240 more as hostages, according to Israel, when they surged over the militarised Gaza border.
AFP reports that the Hamas government said more than 5,500 children were among the dead, alongside 3,500 women, with 30,000 more people wounded. Its health ministry has previously said it can no longer give exact tolls as intense fighting has prevented bodies from being recovered.
The White House announced on Sunday that it is investigating the destructive explosion at a United Nations-operated school and shelter in northern Gaza, as stated by an official.
Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, speaking to CNN, mentioned that Washington is in the process of collecting information regarding Saturday's attacks on the UN-operated school used as a shelter in Gaza. He emphasized, "What I can say at this point... is that, if harm was done to innocent civilians sheltering at a UN site, that would be totally unacceptable."
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep shock at the two UN schools struck within less than 24 hours in Gaza, emphasizing the inviolability of UN premises and the significant number of civilians seeking refuge.
A spokesperson for the UN Relief and Works Agency confirmed the strike on Saturday, marking the second time in 24 hours that a UNRWA school in northern Gaza was hit. Concerns were raised about the high number of civilian casualties in Israel's assault on the Palestinian enclave.
Qatar's Prime Minister, involved in mediating talks for a hostage deal with Hamas in Gaza, mentioned on Sunday that the remaining challenges in negotiations are minor, expressing confidence in reaching a deal.
US Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer, in discussions with NBC, noted progress in securing a deal, while Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant highlighted a growing trend of Iran pushing for militia attacks against Israel through proxies in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. Gallant stated they are closely monitoring these trends to determine the appropriate time, place, and intensity for action.
