Oladokun Ayomide, a final-year student at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, has been apprehended by the Ogun State Police Command on allegations of poisoning his girlfriend, Ugbokwe Mmasichukwu, and another woman, Odumosu Semilore.
According to the police,
Ayomide is accused of administering a poisonous substance, believed to be a
mixture of brownie cakes, alcohol, and an unidentified harmful substance, when
he invited his girlfriend to his residence in the Surulere community in the Camp
area of the city last Friday.
Reports indicate that
Mmasichukwu, before heading to the suspect's residence, asked her schoolmate
Semilore to accompany her to her boyfriend's place in Surulere community, Camp,
Abeokuta. The victims were rushed to the hospital after losing consciousness
immediately following the consumption of the harmful cake.
While the motive behind Ayomide's
actions remains unclear, the police informed our correspondent that preliminary
investigations suggest he had an intention to harm the victims. Olusola
Ajibola, the Chief Security Officer of the Federal College of Education, Osiele
Abeokuta, who led the suspect's arrest, informed the police that Mmasichukwu
and Semilore were students of the institution, whereas Ayomide was a final-year
student at FUNAAB.
In response, Omolola Odutola,
the Public Relations Officer, stated that the victims were responding to
treatment, and further investigations were ongoing to uncover the circumstances
surrounding the incident. "The victims were believed to have been fed
brownie cake, and they immediately lost consciousness after eating it and were
taken to the Osiele Medical Centre for treatment.
A foil paper pack used for the
brownie cake was found when our officers visited the crime scene. The suspect
was handed over to the police division by the Chief Security Officer of the
school," Odutola explained on Tuesday.
