Lagos State Government sheds light on a surprising trend as 340 cases of husbands reporting domestic violence by their wives surface.
In a recent revelation, the Executive Secretary of the Lagos Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, disclosed a significant rise in reported cases of women beating their husbands to submission. The statistics, covering the period from September 2022 to July 2023, indicate a notable increase compared to the preceding year.
Vivour-Adeniyi emphasized the shift in the culture of silence among males regarding Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), noting that the reported cases from male victims doubled from 140 in the period of September 2021 to July 2022 to 340 in the corresponding months of 2022 and 2023.
"This is an indication that the culture of silence amongst the male gender concerning issues of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) is also gradually being broken," she stated.
Further insights revealed by the Executive Secretary highlighted that most domestic violence incidents occurred in the evening, while instances of Sexual Violence were predominantly reported in the afternoon.
The trend analysis for SGBV cases in adults, encompassing both males and females, indicated a sharp increase in reportage between September 2022 and July 2023. The Lagos government's commitment to addressing and understanding these evolving dynamics in domestic violence is crucial for fostering a safer environment for all residents.
