The School of Business Studies has emerged as the overall winners, clinching 8 gold medals in the just concluded Federal Polytechnic Oko Rector's Unity Cup competition held at the campus ground in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The School of Engineering,
which came out as the overall Runner-up (second position) in all
Sports/Athletics students' competitions, won the prestigious male football
Rector's Unity Cup, defeating the School of Business Studies by 3 goals to 1 in
the final football match.
During the closing ceremony before decorating the winners and trophy presentation, the first female Rector, Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Engr. Dr. Mrs. Francisca Nwafulugo, expressed her excitement about the students' performance in the sports competition, which was part of the activities to mark the end of her tenure as the polytechnic rector.
She stated, "I am so
excited about this big event. Football unites every nation together. I see the
joy on everybody's face. It shows oneness, unity, and togetherness. This
rector's cup marks the starting of my valedictory events. It is good for us to
start with sporting activities which bring us together as one.
“We came out in numbers to
appreciate our amiable students who made us proud. I thank you all. Bravo!
School of Engineering, you made me proud by winning the football cup. I am so
excited because I am an engineer, and we are strong. We know it all and possess
the stamina for everything we do."
Moreover, the Acting Registrar
of the polytechnic, Mr. Obini Onuchukwu, eulogized the rector for providing
resources, including various cash rewards, for all categories of winners for
the sporting event, describing it as a means of bonding, togetherness, and
oneness. He said, "Sports can take you to any part of the world. Sports
and football are well-established means of coming together as one family. We
urge you, our sons and daughters, to relate this exercise and these successes
in other areas of your endeavors."
According to the Polytechnic
Head Coach, Mr. Uche Okafor, engaging in sports has many health, mental,
social, and economic benefits for human beings, especially the youths or
students. He stated, "Engr Dr. Mrs. Nwafulugo is the most sports-loving
rector I have witnessed in this Federal Polytechnic, Oko. A skillful sportsman
does not have time to indulge in crime or certain social vices. Since the
training sessions and the actual commencement of this tournament, no student
had time to engage in crime," Okafor said.
The overall results include:
1st Position - School of Business Studies, 8 Gold, 5 Silver, 2 Bronze medals.
The 2nd Position - School of Engineering, 4 Gold, 4 Silver, 4 Bronze medals.
The 3rd Position - School of Information, 2 Gold, 5 Silver, Nil bronze medals.
In Table tennis, Female Single: 1st position - School of Applied Science, 2nd
position - School of Engineering, 3rd position - School of Financial Studies.
Male Single: 1st position - School of Engineering, 2nd position - School of
Information, 3rd position - School of Applied Sciences.
Other dignitaries that graced the grand finale/closing ceremony include the Deputy Rector, Mr. Uche Onyegbu, Chief Librarian, Dr. Nwabu Ezemba, Director Academic Planning, Dr. Ferguson Ezeokafor, Director of Sports, Mr. Kehinde Ogubunmi, the PRO, Mr. Chijioke Ibeziako, among other Directors of Schools and Heads of Departments.
