Liberia Sets Election Standard For African Countries - Peter Obi

In the aftermath of Liberia's recently concluded Presidential elections, Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in Nigeria's February 25 election, commended Liberia for establishing a high standard in election management. Obi highlighted Liberia's achievement of concluding the elections without discord or litigation.

Having contested Nigeria's presidential election and challenging the outcome up to the Supreme Court due to questionable circumstances declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Obi acknowledged the Supreme Court's affirmation of Bola Tinubu's victory as technically based. Despite this, a substantial number of Nigerians maintain skepticism about Tinubu's legitimacy as the elected president.

In a significant turn of events, President George Weah conceded defeat late Friday after provisional results from the week's runoff vote showed opposition party candidate Joseph Boakai leading by just over 1 percentage point. Weah, addressing the nation, acknowledged the voice of the Liberian people and urged acceptance of the election results. He expressed that Boakai was in a lead that they could not surpass and encouraged others to follow his example.

Reacting to the election results announced by the Liberian electoral commission, Peter Obi stated that Liberia has set a standard for African countries to follow. He expressed keen interest in Liberia's just-concluded and seamless presidential elections.

Obi, a Nigerian politician and former Governor of Anambra state in the South East Nigeria, congratulated the declared winner, former Vice President and now President-elect of Liberia, Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party.

"I also extend my congratulations to the president, H.E. George Weah, who has graciously conceded defeat, and thank him especially for his exemplary respect for democracy and the rule of law," said Obi.

In conclusion, Obi extended congratulations to the entire people of Liberia and saluted their National institutions, particularly the Electoral Commission of Liberia. He emphasized that Liberia has set a high bar for African countries in conducting and concluding presidential elections without rancor and litigation. Obi wished them a smooth transition and continuity in governance.
