Gaza Hospital Unable To Bury Dead Bodies - WHO

Amid the escalating conflict, Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza faces significant challenges, potentially trapping thousands due to nearby fighting. The World Health Organization (WHO) characterizes the situation, stating, "The hospital is not working at all any more as it should. It's nearly a cemetery." The hospital manager highlights the difficulties, citing a "blockade" and the distressing fact that dogs are consuming corpses on the hospital grounds.

U.S. President Joe Biden expresses concern, stating, "I hope to see less intrusive action" at the hospital, emphasizing the need for its protection. The area around Al-Shifa Hospital has witnessed intense fighting, and there are reports of tanks and armored vehicles within meters of the hospital gate. Israel alleges that Hamas operates a command-and-control center in tunnels beneath the hospital, a claim denied by both Hamas and the hospital.

The situation is dire, with officials warning of rotting bodies, and the Hamas-run health ministry reporting at least 2,300 people still inside the hospital, including patients, staff, and those seeking shelter. Doctors have expressed concerns about bodies piling up and decomposing, with approximately 150 bodies causing unpleasant odors. Additionally, premature babies are at risk due to power cuts, and negotiations for their evacuation have yet to yield an agreement.

Mark Regev, a senior adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, indicates that Israel is offering practical solutions for the evacuation of babies but accuses Hamas of hindering the process. He claims that Hamas is using the hospital for its operations and turning it "into a war zone" by building tunnels underneath. However, Hamas denies such allegations, while doctors inside assert the absence of a Hamas presence.

Other hospitals across the Gaza Strip are also grappling with widespread issues, including shortages of supplies and power, as a result of the ongoing conflict and the blockade enforced by Israel since Hamas initiated attacks on Israel on October 7th.
