Nnamdi Azikiwe University Faculty of Arts Hosts International Conference: A Confluence of Intellectual Grandeur

By Polycarp Onwubiko

The Faculty of Arts at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka recently hosted an international conference centered around the theme: "Arts and the Art of Nation Building." The event took place at the ASUU Secretariat of the esteemed institution.

The conference was notable for its exceptional efforts in inviting distinguished intellectuals from various backgrounds to present papers and deliver speeches on the intricate task of nation-building, particularly in developing nations like Nigeria.

It is worth noting that the Faculty of Arts boasts globally recognized academicians, a fact not surprising given the influence of the esteemed figure, Right Hon. Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, the first President of Nigeria in the First Republic, after whom the institution is named.

Nation-building in Nigeria has posed significant challenges to political activists, and the lack of pragmatic roadmaps is evident, partly due to ethno-religious conflicts. The lukewarm commitment of political officeholders to prioritize nation-building has resulted in a failure to find common ground to address the profound collective aspirations for a nation where justice, equity, fairness, and the rule of law prevail, hence a conference of this nature.

The presentations and speeches were met with applause from the audience, signaling to the international community that Nnamdi Azikiwe University serves as a hub of intellectual brilliance and magnificence. The impressive presentations practically demonstrated the substantial role that the arts play in nation-building, as witnessed in other countries across the globe.

The lead presenter, Prof. Benjamin Chukwuma Ozumba, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a medical doctor, argued that "Arts is the foundation of science," emphasising its various components and creative aspects.

According to Prof. Ozumba, "Medicine is more art than science, as it roots in art. The creative aspect of arts, particularly language, serves to mobilise people for national development." He further highlighted the technological advances in countries that have integrated virtual arts into medicine. Arts, he noted, promotes tourism, a vital source of foreign exchange for many nations.

Dr. Ozumba underlined that the National Anthem and National Flag themselves are artistic creations that serve as rallying points for national awareness and contributions to national development. He encouraged young individuals to embrace arts as a means of self-expression, offering an avenue to explore creative imagination and earn a decent living. The role of arts in nation-building was further exemplified by advanced countries like China, the United States, and Britain.

Another lead presenter, heading the Department of Linguistics and popularly known as the "Man of Letters," echoed Prof. Ozumba's sentiments, asserting that arts significantly contribute to national development. He stressed the expression of human imagination and creativity inherent in arts and its foundational role in scholarship, ranging from Geometry and Arithmetic to religion and philosophy.

The "Man of Letters" contended that arts foster imagination and creativity in humanity, as art is inherently linked to the nature of humankind. He highlighted the importance of arts in teaching and learning, emphasizing that a concerted effort is needed to raise awareness of the contributions of arts to nation-building.

The keynote speaker, former Minister of Aviation, Hon. Osita Benjamin Chidoka, explored the cultural dimensions of arts as a valuable contribution to nation-building. He underscored the lack of transparency, accountability, merit, honesty, and integrity in public affairs in Nigeria.

Awards were presented to all the presenters, including notable figures such as the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, HRH, and Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, CEO of Cubana Group, among others.

The event featured a performance by the Faculty of Arts' group and a cultural dance troupe.

In her vote of thanks on behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Mrs. Chinyere Esimone expressed gratitude to the guests and those who pledged support to the Faculty,

She acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the Faculty's staff, whose diverse research interests and insightful abstracts enriched the conference, fostering a vibrant environment for intellectual exchange and scholarly discussions. Such collaborative efforts and a dedication to academia are essential in advancing knowledge and understanding in the arts and humanities.
