Tears of anguish as emotions ran high and curses rained on Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo as traders and shop owners counted their losses as the state government intensified its demolition exercise across the state with much concentration in Awka, the state capital.
The exercise which has been carried out in many parts of Awka has affected the masses the most.
The Soludo administration has engaged in massive demolition of structures in many parts of the state in what it termed urban renewal.
During his electioneering campaign, Gov. Soludo promised to turn Anambra State into African Dubai and fix anything broken in the state.
Traders and shop owners at the Government House axis said they are still in shock and disbelief as they watched their shops and goods destroyed.
They said they weren't properly informed about it, citing 24 hours' notice and no notice in other places where the exercises were carried out.
A lady was full of tears as it was gathered that she had just stocked up her shop with N300,000 worth of goods a day before her shop was demolished, "where do I start from. I don't know what to do. The whole thing is like a dream to me. Gov. Soludo administration lacks human sympathy," she said.
A middle-aged woman who recently relocated from Asaba, Delta State, was gathered caters mostly to her family, asked what the government wants them to do to feed their families, "this administration is inconsiderate of people's plight. Look what they have done at this time when the economy is harsh on the masses."
"It's shocking that when Gov. Soludo should be making life easier for us, he rather engages in activities that make life difficult for us. What shall it profit him to leave us without any means of livelihood."
Another victim said he has no problem with any developmental project and would always support such, but not in the fashion that Gov. Soludo carries that out to the disadvantage of the poor masses.
"I can't understand why the Governor has embarked on the demolition of shops and buildings. Two years into his administration, we have seen more demolitions in the state than any meaningful developmental projects. He should concentrate on projects that will alleviate economic hardship and not aggravate issues for the masses."
