Ex-Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has opened up on how he was poisoned at the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in December 2018.
The former governor disclosed this at a special Thanksgiving service organised in his honour at the St. Peters Deanery, Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor, on Sunday.
He said that the poison destroyed his internal organs, including his liver and kidneys, and that it would have killed him except for God’s interventions.
“God was in control; it was chaotic, and everyone who knows how we came to power in 2015 recognised it. But God delivered us. Many people believe that you are doing well while in office. Nobody is interested in learning about the issues you are having as a person.
“In December 2018, it was the day of Thanksgiving for my former chief of staff. I was expected to go to that Thanksgiving. I remained in my room every day after that Sunday. It was awful. But those who were present at the state banquet on January 1st of 2019 will recall that I remained silent that evening. I simply sat there and requested that the Deputy Governor speak on my behalf. I believed it was over.

Wike claimed that after being sent to a hospital in Lebanon, medical professionals there informed him that his liver and kidneys had completely failed.
He claimed that after about a week, the physicians released him and asked him to go home, adding that he had changed his plans during the campaigns for his second term.
The former governor claimed that after he made the decision to never enter the home of a party leader while running for office, everyone became a suspect.
He remembered that during his campaign for president, his wife called to inform him that she had been diagnosed with cancer. This was the second time that God had intervened in his life.
According to Wike, he told his campaign’s leaders, including the G-5 Governors, that there was an issue and that he intended to withdraw from the race.
But he claimed that his wife urged him to keep up his campaigns and reassured him that everything would be fine.
The governor also recalled receiving informed that his wife’s room had been completely destroyed by a mystery fire after the primary while he and his wife were travelling to Abuja.
Despite all, he said: “My wife is a strong woman, but she never showed it. However, my wife is in good health right now. The incidence involving the cancer was the one in which I was aware of God’s complete favour.
Wike also remembered another time when God spared the lives of him and three other officials in a plane catastrophe.
He claimed that 15 minutes after takeoff, one of the plane’s engines exploded as they were flying to Abuja from the presidential primary.
“We heard an explosion at the Air Force installation 15 minutes after takeoff. The cockpit was secured. The pilot advised turning around and returning to Port Harcourt since one of the engines was broken. Ambulances and fire trucks were queued up in large numbers before we landed. With God’s help, we arrived safely. I kept it a secret,” he claimed.
The former governor claimed he kept the majority of the instances under wraps so as not to alarmed his supporters, who would start behaving anyhow.
Wike claimed he made the decision to express his gratitude to God for enabling a smooth transition in Rivers and giving him victories in every election that took place in the state.
“Ask my colleague how they felt about their replacement candidates failing to be chosen. Even those who hadn’t taken the oath of office yet began torturing their predecessors. However, no one is harassing me.
The former governor claimed that his party had formed a nationwide gang to arrest him if his decisions had been unsuccessful, and he added that at times, his supporters were afraid they would all get into jail.
He acknowledged that he had purchased every ballot for every election held by the party, noting that no candidate had paid anything for ballots.
“I spent money on each form. Nobody would claim that he spent any money to purchase the forms for the House of Assembly and the governorship. We decided to function as a unit. Only one form is used in the House of Assembly and the Senate. “We didn’t want anything that could be described as a post-election crisis,” he stated. .
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and a few other current and former governors were among those present at the event.
