It was announced on Tuesday that the renowned American singer, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, has chosen a popular Nigerian-owned restaurant in North London as one of the fortunate recipients of a grant.
The initiative called the Black Parade Small
Business Impact Luncheon, was established by Beyoncé’s BeyGood Foundation to
recognize and support individuals, communities, and small businesses affected
by economic inequalities across the globe. To show her commitment, Beyoncé has
allocated a generous amount of £806,400 to assist these businesses.
Furthermore, among the ten winners of this
grant, Chuku’s, a Nigerian-owned restaurant which is located in Tottenham, has
been selected to receive £8,000 from Beyoncé’s foundation.
Emeka Frederick, one of the co-founders of
Chuku’s, expressed his sheer delight upon hearing the news. He mentioned the
immense challenges faced by restaurants like theirs, which lack financial
reserves and have been severely impacted by lockdowns and the rising cost of
living.
Struggling to stay open and looking forward
to celebrating their fourth anniversary, Chuku’s now feels a glimmer of hope
with this much-needed financial boost. The grant will ease their fight to stay
afloat and enable them to continue showcasing and celebrating the vibrant
Nigerian culture along Tottenham’s High Road, at least for the foreseeable
future.
The highly anticipated luncheon took place at
the esteemed Four Seasons hotel in Tower Hill, where more than 100
entrepreneurs gathered for the event. They were given the exciting opportunity
to compete for a share of the impressive £806,000 prize pool, offered by
Beyoncé’s foundation.
