Amid the ongoing internal crisis rocking the leadership of the Labour Party ahead of the commencement of the legal battle of Peter Obi over the outcome of the just-concluded presidential election, renowned political analyst, Dayo Sobowale has come out to give a reason why the crisis may be a ploy by external forces to stop the former Anambra governor from pursuing his court petition to a favorable conclusion.
Recall that within the past two weeks, a
rival faction led by a certain Lamidi Apapa has been engaged in a power tussle
with the National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, with the sole aim of taking
over leadership of the Labour Party. Apapa is said to have assumed the role of
Acting National Chairman after his faction procured a court injunction to have
Abure removed from office.
While analyzing the ongoing saga during an
interview on ARISE TV’s ‘News Night’ on Wednesday, Sobowale opined that the
moves being made by Apapa’s faction might somehow be connected to Obi’s
petition in court. According to the renowned analyst, those who are believed to
be sponsoring the crisis are fully aware of Obi’s impressive history in
election litigation and might be wary of facing the former Anambra governor in
court.
He said; “The elections have come and gone,
but the battle has shifted to the courts. Those who are said to be sponsoring
this current Labour Party crisis are doing so because they are aware of Obi’s
history in court litigation. The man is a veteran. When he was governor of
Anambra, he was impeached, then returned. I think he went to court on three
different cases and won on all three occasions.
He was eventually allowed to serve his 8-year
term as governor. Obi may look boyish on the outside but let’s not make any
mistake about it, the man is a very rugged politician. The man also has a very
rugged history with the judiciary. He was very much underrated until the
present election.”
