Moses Amiebenomo, popularly known as a celebrity carpenter, has narrated how he was rejected by his father for refusing to study medicine at the university. It was gathered that the father of this young man is a renowned lawyer from Auchi, Edo State.
In an exclusive report by the Punch Newspaper, the young man revealed how he was sent to study medicine at the University of Maiduguri after scoring 280 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
On reaching the university, he opted to study chemistry
instead, as the subject came naturally to him. When his father heard that his
son was studying chemistry instead of medicine, he stopped helping him
financially and asked other members of the family to do so with the hope that
hunger would bring him back on track.
However, Moses Amiebenomo was not deterred
from studying his course of choice but was forced to do menial jobs in school
just to put food on his table and save for his tuition fees. After graduating
with no tangible work to do, he found out he had a talent for carpentry and
decided to go to Italy to learn the craft from the best.
On reaching Italy, he found out that the company where he wanted to learn carpentry was no longer carrying apprentices. This didn’t make the young man give up on his dream, as he packed his luggage and gave it to the assistant of the company’s house, who gave him a place to stay and later allowed him to stay in his basement.
His prior knowledge of
Chemistry became a saving grace for Amiebenomo as he successfully tutored
Chemistry to his host’s son, who was an undergraduate at the university and was
on the verge of dropping out. This act made the assistant take him to the
workshop to teach him carpentry.
After learning this craft, he came back to
Nigeria but was still struggling to get clients. However, after a man who loved
his work gave him a contract worth N 1.6 million, his business has continued to
expand since then. He built his workshop and became successful, but his father
won’t still collect the gifts and foodstuffs he sent home.
In a bid to reach out to his dad, he spoke to
a human rights radio station about his situation, which drew the attention of
his father, who sent for him. Moses apologized to his father upon reaching home
and told him what he does for a living. His father then decided to visit his
workshop.
When his father visited, Moses said, “When he
came here, he looked around and said, “Why is that guy not wearing a helmet?”
and other stuff.” I was a bit tense when he started saying this, but when we
came out of the building, he held my hand and said, “I am very proud of you.”
“That was the greatest thing anybody has ever
said to me in my life, and I was happy.”
