Manchester City are reportedly preparing to offer Erling Braut Haaland the chance to sign a new long-term contract with the Premier League champions.
The 22-year-old made the move to the Etihad Stadium from Borussia
Dortmund last July, penning a five-year contract with the Citizens.
Haaland has been in remarkable scoring form for Man City during the
2022-23 campaign, netting 47 times in 40 appearances in all competitions, while
he has also contributed six assists.
According to The Athletic, Man City now want to offer the Norway
international a new deal after a release clause in his current agreement was
removed.
The report claims that there was a £150m buy-out fee in the deal, which
would have become active in the summer of 2024, but it was related to Pep
Guardiola's future as head coach, and the clause was cancelled when the manager
signed a new contract.
The Citizens now allegedly want to sign Haaland to a fresh contract,
although it is unclear whether he will be offered an improvement on his current
salary.
The Norwegian is believed to be open to discussing a new deal despite
ongoing claims that he eventually wants to make the move to Real Madrid.
A recent report claimed that Real Madrid are determined to sign Haaland
in 2024, viewing him as the ideal replacement for Karim Benzema.
The forward scored 86 goals in 89 appearances for Dortmund before making
the move to the Etihad Stadium, and he has been able to continue his incredible
form in front of goal in Manchester.
Haaland has 11 Champions League goals to his name this season and is
bidding to lead Man City into the semi-finals of the competition at the expense
of Bayern Munich.
The striker has also scored 32 Premier League goals during his first
season in English football, but the Citizens are four points behind leaders
Arsenal in the table.
Haaland has netted braces in his last two league outings against
Southampton and Leicester City, while he also scored in the first leg of Man
City's Champions League quarter-final with Bayern.
Guardiola's side will follow the second leg against Bayern with an FA
Cup semi-final against versus Championship outfit Sheffield United on Saturday
afternoon.
The Citizens will then be back in Premier League action against Arsenal
next Wednesday in what could be a defining match in this season's title race.
