Man United rise into third position with victory over Everton

Manchester United secured a crucial 2-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, moving up to third position in the Premier League table.

The Red Devils have now won back-to-back games against Brentford and Everton, rising from fifth to third place in the league standings. Scott McTominay opened the scoring for the home side in the 36th minute of the game, with Anthony Martial coming off the bench to double their lead in the 71st minute.

The win sees Manchester United six points ahead of fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who have played the same number of games (29) as the Red Devils. Everton, on the other hand, remain in 16th place, level on points with 18th-placed Bournemouth, and facing a battle to stay in the Premier League this season.

Despite dominating the first half, Manchester United were unable to convert their chances, with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making several important saves to keep the game goalless. Amadou Onana and Ellis Simms also missed crucial chances for the visitors.

Manchester United continued to press in the second half, with Rashford, Antony, Sancho, Sabitzer, and Fernandes all causing problems for the Everton defense. Pickford made another important save to deny Wan-Bissaka from a corner, but the home side finally doubled their lead in the 71st minute, thanks to an error from Everton captain Seamus Coleman. Rashford broke into a dangerous area and picked out Martial, who converted from close range.

Demarai Gray had a chance to pull one back for Everton in the 75th minute, but his effort went wide of the far post. Christian Eriksen made his injury return for Manchester United in the 77th minute, featuring for the first time since suffering an ankle injury at the end of January.

Manchester United will now turn their attention to the Europa League, as they prepare to face Sevilla in the quarter-final on Thursday, before returning to league action away to Nottingham Forest next Sunday. Everton, meanwhile, will continue their battle against relegation with a home game against Fulham next Saturday.
