Nigerian music superstar, David Adeleke, professionally known as Davido, has recounted how his billionaire dad, Chief Adedeji Adeleke, sent police to arrest him several times in the early days of his career.
The ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ crooner said his dad was
initially against his musical career and wanted him to focus on his education.
Despite the opposition from his father, Davido still pursued his passion for
music, which has now made him one of the biggest music stars in Africa.
Davido recently featured on Ebro in the Morning
Show on Hot 97FM, New York, USA, on the heels of his album release. During the
interview, he opened up about how his father tried to discourage him from
pursuing a career in music, and even went as far as using the police to
frustrate him.
According to Davido, his dad was not
supportive of his music career in the early days and would send police
operatives to arrest him and disrupt shows he was billed to perform at several
times. He said, “He sent police to get me like he sees a billboard; for example,
‘Davido performing, Wizkid performing’. He will send police to arrest
everybody.”
Davido’s dad wanted him to focus on his
education and believed that music would distract him from achieving his
academic goals. However, Davido was determined to pursue his passion and make a
name for himself in the music industry.
The singer recounted how his father sent the
police to arrest him during one of his shows, and he ended up in a cell.
However, while in custody, one of the police officers recognized him after hearing
his song on the radio. The officer let him go, and that was when Davido knew he
had made it in the music industry.
Despite the initial opposition from his
father, Davido has gone on to achieve great success in the music industry, with
several hit songs and collaborations with international music stars. He has won
numerous awards both locally and internationally and has sold out shows in
different parts of the world.
Davido's dad is now proud of him, and he is
his number one fan. The singer said that his father is happy with his success
and believes that he made the right decision in pursuing his passion.
