CBN GOV: Lamido Sanusi mulled as Emefiele’s successor

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor and former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, is being considered as a potential successor to the current CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

According to reports, President-elect Bola Tinubu is said to admire Sanusi and his track record, and may consider appointing him as the next CBN boss. Tinubu and his allies had a disagreement with Emefiele over the CBN's monetary policies in 2022, with Tinubu's camp alleging that the policies were designed to hurt his chances at the 2023 presidential election.

Governors loyal to Tinubu, such as Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State and Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, took the matter to the Supreme Court and won, forcing the CBN to reverse its deadline on old Naira notes.

Sanusi is known for his extensive banking reforms, which were built around four pillars: enhancing the quality of banks, establishing financial stability, enabling healthy financial sector evolution, and ensuring the financial sector contributes to the real economy. Among these reforms was the introduction of the cashless policy.
