23-yr- old Lady dies, 4 days after hip surgery in Lagos

Destiny Benjamin, a 23-year-old woman, has been reported dead four days after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Lagos.

The incident has caused outrage on social media, with many sharing a viral video of the botched procedure.

Dr. Ogbe Omoruyi, the owner of the clinic, denied the allegation that the lady died in the hospital during the surgery. He explained that Benjamin underwent the surgery on March 8, 2023, and complained of difficulty in breathing before being referred to Genesis Specialists Hospital, Ikeja GRA, Lagos State, where she later passed away.

Omoruyi confirmed that Benjamin was 23 years old, not 20 years as was previously reported. He also stated that her surgery went well and she was fine, but after a few days, she started having difficulty breathing. The clinic placed her on oxygen, stabilized her, and referred her to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) just 10 minutes away from their facility.

According to Omoruyi, Benjamin's condition was investigated, and a CT pulmonary angiogram was performed to detect any clots in her pulmonary system. The investigation showed that she had a different diagnosis after the embolism, but she was not pulmonary assort. Despite the investigation, Benjamin passed away.

“Unfortunately, as we all know, surgery has its own risk, and if you ask any professional doctor or surgeon who knows about life consumptions and tractions, it is very easy to think that she could have fat embolism or clot embolism, but she had difficulty breathing," said Omoruyi.

He also stated that an autopsy had not been done, and it is unclear whether the family will consent to it. Omoruyi refuted social media reports that the clinic had recorded five deaths in a year, stating that the clinic has only had two recorded deaths, which occurred in 2018 and 2021.

When the Lagos State spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, was contacted, he said he was not aware of the incident and that the families of the bereaved had not reported it to the police authority.

Efforts to contact the Genesis Specialist Hospital were unsuccessful at the time of press. Omoruyi maintained that Benjamin was fine after her surgery, and her cousin, Sunset, who was with her after the surgery, confirmed this by taking pictures with her and moving around the clinic compound two days later.
