Nigerian singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has revealed that he abandoned his admission to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) due to the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Rema had announced in January 2022 that he gained admission to study at UNILAG, stating that his decision was based on his mother's insistence that he should obtain a degree from a university.
However, a month after his admission, ASUU
embarked on an eight-month strike, which was later suspended on October 14. In
an interview, Rema stated that he lost interest in continuing with school due
to the industrial action. "I bailed on it because they went on
strike," he said.
When the interviewer asked him to reveal the
name of the university, the 'Calm Down' crooner mentioned the University of
Lagos, adding that all schools went on strike in Nigeria. Rema further stated
that he had planned to strategize how he would combine part-time schooling and
touring but the strike made it look awkward. "It was like a glitch, so I
just had to move on from it," he said.
Despite Rema's decision to focus on his music
career, he revealed that his mother was not worried about his decision to ditch
school. "My mum is fine with it. She travels with me too. She was in
London with me but it was quite cold, so she had to run back home," he
said.
Rema has continued to enjoy fame in Nigeria's
music industry with a series of hit projects. In 2020, he recalled how his
mother's support was essential after he lost his father and brother. Despite
not obtaining a degree, the young artist's talent and dedication to his craft
have made him a force to reckon with in the Nigerian music industry.
