Mixed reactions has trailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)'s announcement of Senator Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, as winners of the of the February 25,2023 presidential election.
While President Muhammadu Buhari
congratulated Tinubu on his victory by promising him a great achievement, he
ordered Nigerians to avoid violence and actions that could undermine the
democratic process.
The President then urged those who were
dissatisfied with the way the process was completed to seek redress.
Similarly, the Federal Executive Council
(FEC) described Tinubu's victory as evidence that democracy was rapidly taking
hold in Nigeria.
A statement by the Federation Government
Secretary (SGF) to Chief Mustafa on behalf of the FEC expressed his belief that
the new government would build on the legacy of the previous one.
“The Secretary of the Government of the
Federation and Chairman of the Presidential Transition Council, Boss Mustapha
(CFR), on behalf of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), congratulates the
President-elect, His Excellency Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the
Vice-President-elect, His Excellency Senator Kashima Shettima, on the occasion
of her victory in the just-concluded presidential elections.
“FEC notes that the newly elected President,
Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is an experienced administrator, a technocrat of
towering proportions, an astute politician and a committed party activist whose
unparalleled determination to move the country He is confident that the new
government will build on the legacy of the previous government to ensure a
united, peaceful, prosperous and manly nation. In this regard, the FEC urges
Nigerians to avoid violence and other negative acts that could undermine the
achievements of the current democratic process, and calls on the political
parties concerned to seek redress where appropriate.”
Furthermore, House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila
described Tinubu's victory as a victory for democracy, saying that "the
company is a testament to years of hard work, building bridges across the
country, perseverance and belief in Nigeria's unity.“
At a similar event, the leading Igbo
socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, congratulated Bola Tinubu on his
victory and said that the Igbo would support the elected president until a
competent court decides otherwise.
A statement published yesterday in Enugu by
Ohanaeze Secretary-General Okechukwu Isiguzoro also advised Tinubu to extend
the olive branch to other candidates.
Similarly, former Labor Party Presidential
Campaign Council (PCC) director-general Doyin Okupe expressed his
disappointment at the outcome of the All Progressive Congress (PCA)
presidential election.
Okupe shared his displeasure via Twitter
hours after Tinubu was declared the winner yesterday.
