Less than 24 hours before Presidential and the National Assembly elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Abia State Chapter says it has suspended Senate Majority Leader Orji Uzor Kar (Abia North) on suspicion of anti-party activity and other offences.
APC, in its letter announcing Kanu's
suspension, said it would take effect immediately.
The party has accused Kalu undermining and
obstructing the party in the state. The former Abia governor had been at loggerheads with the leadership
and members of Abia APC over who controls the party in the state.
The suspension letter dated 21 February, said
Kalu was suspended for "disobedience and gross anti-party activity."
This letter was signed by Paul Nwabuisi,
Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, State Secretary, Chief Chidi Abaja,
and State Chairman, Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu.
Kalu, who clashed with a number of APC chiefs
in Abia, is noted as "not repentant and unrepentant, despite being warned
many times."
APC said Kalu's suspension was based on
"a thorough investigations and recommendations by a Disciplinary Committee
set up by his Igbere Ward A in Bende Local Government, Abia State."
The party further said that Kalu's suspension
was consistent with Article 21B (i-v) of his APC Constitution, which Kalu
violated. Part of letter read in part: "You are hereby suspended from
participating in the All Progressive Congress (APC)."
The party has also accused Kalu of promoting
the interests of the Action People's Party (APP), in which his younger brother
and mascot Uzor Kalu is a candidate for governor.
In a new development Abia State's ruling All
Progressive Congress (APC) Party spokesman Okey Ezeala denied the report from
Orji Kalu suspension saying the report was the work of the People's Democratic
Party (PDP).
A brief statement signed by Ezeala said the
party had distanced itself from the report and said there was no real iota in
calling the report false.
Ezeala said the malicious report was caused
by the PDP's fear of accepting defeat tomorrow. "Senator Orji Uzor Kalu remains a candidate for our great party because
both the party and his voters are satisfied with his achievements," he said.
